Long Question for 7/8 Marks

Q - 25. How did Franz's feelings about M. Hamel and school change?

Answer- The order from Berlin changed Franz's feeling about M. Hamel and school. When Franz learnt that it would be his last French lesson in the school, he felt strangely sad. Suddenly he felt a mysterious liking for this language. He felt sorry for not having learnt his lesson. His books which had seemed such a nuisance, only a while ago were his old friends now. As after years of faithful service, M. Hamel would go away and he would never see him again pained Franz so much. He forgot all about his ruler and crankiness.

Q - 27. What did Franz notice that was unusual about that school that day?

Answer- That day Franz found something unusual about the school. Usually when school began, a great bustle could be heard out in the street. The opening and closing of desks and the lessons repeated loudly in unison made a lot of noise. But that day everything was still and silent as if it was a Sunday morning. M. Hamel put on his beautiful green coat, his frilled shirt and the little black silk cap, all embroidered that he never wore except on inspection and prize days. The most surprising thing was the presence of the village elders. Some village people like old Hauser, the former mayor, the former postmaster and several others besides were sitting quietly on the back benches of the class. Generally M. Hamel was a hard taskmaster. But that day he did not rebuke Franz when he entered the classroom quite late. Nor did he scold him when he was unable to answer the question.

Q - 28. Draw a character sketch of M. Hamel as it is shown in "The last lesson".

Answer- In "The last lesson" Alphonse Daudet has presented M. Hamel as traditional school master. He always kept his terrible ruler under his arm. He was a disciplinarian who wanted students to be punctual and wanted them to learn their lesson well. He was very cranky. After the order from Berlin came, M. Hamel was a completely changed man. He was specially kind and gentle and loving towards his students. He looked grave, serious and very patient. He did not scold Franz for coming late. Patriotic feelings were aroused in him. M. Hamel was highly respected both by his students and the village elders. He had served faithfully for 40 years in the same school. The villagers were sitting on the back benches of the class to show their respect to M. Hamel. He taught with interest and dedication till last moment of the class.
